Hansen: Houston must improve public and non-market housing

HALIFAX – NDP Housing spokesperson Suzy Hansen made the following statement in response to today’s Auditor General’s report on public housing in Nova Scotia:

“We know that there have been issues with the way the province has managed public housing for years. And the government knows it too. Today’s report is another opportunity for the Houston government to directly address the housing crisis and take action to ensure people are able to find affordable homes.

With almost 6000 people on the waitlist for public housing, this is not something that will be fixed with small changes over time. The Houston government needs to be investing in public and non-market housing rather than only relying on giving public funds to the private sector through programs like rent supplements and private development deals.

Housing is a human right. The government needs to start acting like this is true.”
