Truth and Reconciliation Require Action and Commitment
HALIFAX – Lisa Lachance, NDP Spokesperson for the Office of L’nu Affairs, made the following statement ahead of National Truth and Reconciliation Day:
“Tomorrow on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Saturday on Treaty Day, and through Mi’kmaq History Month in October, we have the opportunity and encourage people to learn about and take action to uphold the Treaties of Peace and Friendship.
Earlier this year, the province passed the Mi’kmaw Language Act which officially recognized Mi’kmaw as the province’s first language. This law will take effect on October 1 and is an important step on the road to reconciliation.
Together, with other provincial leaders, New Democrats are committed to doing the work, to not only learn about and celebrate Mi’kmaq culture but to take action and build towards true healing and justice.”
