Treaty Day an opportunity to recognize Mi’kmaw history, culture

HALIFAX – The following is a statement from NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender in recognition of Treaty Day:

“Today, we recognize Treaty Day in Nova Scotia. This day serves as an important reminder of the agreements that underpin the relationships we hold and the respect we owe to Mi’kmaw culture, history and traditions.

Treaty Day is an opportunity to honour the rich heritage and resilience of the Mi’kmaq and to stand together in acknowledging them as the original stewards of the land here in Mi'kma'ki.

As we celebrate Treaty Day, we also renew our commitment to fostering reconciliation. While we recognize the progress that’s been made, we must also confront the important work to be done and the historic injustices that continue to impact Indigenous communities.

As we begin Mi'kmaw History Month this October, we encourage everyone to celebrate and learn about the vibrant history, culture and heritage of the Mi’kmaq. Thank you and wela’lin.”
