Time to address barriers to trans health care
Halifax -- Nova Scotia NDP 2SLGBTQ+ Affairs spokesperson Susan Leblanc made the following statement on this Transgender Day of Remembrance :
“The Transgender Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to reflect on the systemic barriers to employment, housing, and healthcare that leave transgender and non-binary people more vulnerable to violence.
Access to gender affirming health care - including but not limited to gender confirming surgery - is absolutely key to ensuring the wellbeing and safety of trans and non-binary people. For those who want to, undergoing medical transition has been proven to vastly improve mental health outcomes for transgender and non-binary people and reduce their risk of suicide.”
The Nova Scotia NDP is committed to fighting for better access to health care for transgender and non-binary people and removing discriminatory and binary language from Nova Scotia’s laws including the Vital Statistics Act.
