Students, staff, communities paying the price for Houston’s budget cuts: NDP

HALIFAX —Today, NSNDP Labour and Advanced Education Critic Paul Wozney made the following statement about job losses at the Nova Scotia Community College:

“The news of cuts at the Nova Scotia Community College is deeply upsetting and devastating for the people who have lost their jobs, the students they support, and the communities these schools serve.
The NSCC creates good jobs in rural communities and trains the skilled workers our province depends on. Ninety-one people have lost their jobs – including librarians who deliver the research supports that students rely on. These losses are difficult for families in communities across the province and they have real impacts on student success.
Decisions like these from the Houston government don’t help young people build a bright future here in the province. These cuts are happening because this government makes decisions without doing the work to understand the impact they’ll have. There is clearly no plan and it’s our schools, our students, and our communities who are paying the price.
We need to support the places that make our province and rural communities thrive – not cut them.”
