Statement by Tammy Martin on housing and homelessness in Cape Breton

SYDNEY - Tammy Martin, NDP MLA for Cape Breton Centre, made the following statement in response to the government's announcement on funding for homeless shelters in Cape Breton:

“I’m pleased to see the government finally taking action to address homelessness in Cape Breton. The NDP brought this issue forward in committee last spring where we heard about the disproportionate level of need on the island.

We need to do much more to address the roots of homelessness, including the real lack of affordable housing, and the low-wage, part-time economy here in Cape Breton.”

The NDP has introduced bills to re-establish rent control which would limit how much and how often landlords could increase rent.
