Roberts: Government must be more proactive in forestry management

Halifax — NDP Lands and Forestry Spokesperson Lisa Roberts made the following statement today about recent reversals on planned clear cuts of old-growth areas:

“The people of Nova Scotia shouldn’t have to be monitoring the government’s actions on this file as the only way to ensure that old-growth forests are preserved for sustainable ecological forestry and wildlife habitat.

We’ve had a number of examples recently, including one where the Department admits it mistakenly suggested there would be a clear cut in an area that includes a 400-year-old tree. This government needs to do much better on how it approves cuts in our forests.”
