Return-to-work changes for injured workers in Nova Scotia long overdue: NDP
HALIFAX – Today, NSNDP Labour Critic Paul Wozney made the following statement about the return-to-work legislation which comes into effect today:
“Workers in Nova Scotia have not had the support that they deserve when returning to work after an injury and, far too often, that has taken a significant toll on their quality of life.
In other parts of Canada like B.C., Ontario, P.E.I, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, governments have taken a more proactive approach to helping people adjust and adapt to work following an injury. Nova Scotia has the lowest proportion of those injured at work who are back to work within 30 days and within 180 days compared to other provinces.
Clearly, urgent action and leadership from government was required to better support Nova Scotian workers. New Democrats support the long overdue changes coming into effect today and will continue to advocate for measures that help workers and their families adapt to unexpected circumstances. Having clear definitions in place so employers and workers know what is expected of them and return to work timelines guided by a doctor’s assessment are crucial to help workers get back on track.
All Nova Scotians should be able to expect meaningful work and fair wages, even if their work looks different following an injury.”
