Renters and advocates call for change to Rent Cap, Residential Tenancies Act

HALIFAX – NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement today following the Law Amendments Committee on Bill #467 – the Interim Residential Rental Increase Cap Act and Residential Tenancies Act:

“Today at Law Amendments Committee we heard from seniors worried about increasing rents, students who could be evicted due to late payments of student loans, advocates concerned about the impact of tightened eviction timelines, and everyday people who see the general unfairness of the government’s bills.
Extending the rent cap for two more years gives some renters a minimum amount of predictability but it does nothing to close the fixed-term lease loophole or ensure new renters are able to find homes they can afford.
While this bill continues its way through the legislature, New Democrat MLAs will continue to push for changes to strengthen the legislation to provide better protections for renters and real rent control that allows predictable increases for everyone.”
