Protected areas must be protected: Claudia Chender

HALIFAX – Today, Official Opposition Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement in response to news that the West Mabou Beach Provincial Park development won’t go ahead:

“Thanks to the hard work and advocacy from Cape Bretoners and Nova Scotians across the province, the Houston government has decided to walk back its disastrous plan to consider selling off West Mabou Beach Provincial Park to Cabot.

The proposal should never have gotten this far in the first place. This situation has put the entire community of Mabou and the surrounding areas through turmoil and hardship for no reason.

The Premier still hasn’t ruled out any future West Mabou development talks with Cabot. The Houston government cannot continue to entertain proposals that put our public land at risk for private profit. We call on the Houston government to make it clear to Nova Scotians that protected land is protected – full stop.”
