Primary Care Waitlist grows to over 142,000 amid multiple clinic closures

Halifax — The Houston government record on connecting Nova Scotians with Family Care Teams continues to deteriorate. As of April 1, 2023, the number of Nova Scotians waiting for a primary care provider has grown to over 142,000.

“Every week, we hear from more Nova Scotians joining the primary care wait list with no hope in sight of being connected with the primary care they need,” said Susan Leblanc, NDP Spokesperson for Health. “These numbers will continue to grow until the Houston government takes meaningful action to connect people with the Family Care Teams they need. It’s disappointing that Houston’s budget didn’t include any clear investment that will make a significant difference in decreasing the number of Nova Scotians on the list.”

Last month, several clinics announced they’d be closing, including multiple clinics in the HRM, such as the Southend Family Practice. The Houston government has refused to help keep these clinics open, pushing thousands more people onto the doctors waitlist.
