NSNDP statement on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

HALIFAX – Today Official Opposition Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement ahead of National Truth and Reconciliation Day tomorrow, September 30:

“Across Canada, we take time today to remember the terrible, ongoing legacy of the residential school system. These institutions tore apart Indigenous families and communities and left many of those who survived with lifelong trauma.

Here in Nova Scotia, Mi’kmaw and other Indigenous children were forced to go to the Shubenacadie Residential School. It is a testament to the resilience and strength of Mi’kmaw communities that their language and culture have endured despite decades of oppression and systemic violence.

Today and every day, we remember those who never came home to their families; we honour the survivors, and together we reaffirm that Every Child Matters.

In Nova Scotia, there is a lot of work left to be done. Of the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, 34 are provincial responsibility. We have yet to see the PC government implement these calls.

Today, the Nova Scotia NDP recommits to pushing for progress on a true nation-to-nation relationship with the Mi’kmaq, protectors of this land.”
