NSNDP statement on historic legislation declaring intimate partner violence an epidemic

HALIFAX – The following is a statement from Nova Scotia NDP Leader Claudia Chender:

“All political parties in Nova Scotia came together today to declare intimate partner violence an epidemic. This historic legislation turns an accepted recommendation from the Mass Casualty Commission into law.
There is much more work to be done, but this bill serves as an important first step to recognize intimate partner violence as the epidemic it is and validate the experiences of survivors.
Domestic and intimate partner violence is a deep-rooted problem that touches every corner of our province. For too long, survivors have suffered in silence due to stigma. With this legislation, we will uplift their voices and continue to advocate for them.
The NSNDP is committed to supporting survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence. We will continue to fight to expand paid leave for survivors fleeing intimate partner violence, and call on the Houston government to provide epidemic-level funding to organizations that support survivors of domestic violence.”
