Nova Scotians aren’t seeing the results of Houston’s out-of-control spending

HALIFAX – Today, NSNDP Finance Critic Lisa Lachance made the following statement about the Houston government’s fall economic update:

“Nova Scotians are working harder than ever just to keep up. They’re paying more for housing, groceries and everyday essentials, yet they can’t depend on their emergency rooms to stay open, or their roads to stay in good repair. Instead of making their lives easier, the Houston government has dug a massive financial hole – a $1.4 billion deficit, record debt, and record debt servicing costs – while Nova Scotians are still waiting to see the results in their daily lives.

People want investment in health care but, after five years, trust in this government is broken. Nova Scotians are still waiting hours in emergency rooms and years to see specialists, and despite record spending, there is still no clear plan to fix it.

At the same time, people have serious questions about where exactly this money is going. This government has a pattern of spending billions without competition, out-of-budget spending is out of control, and this government won’t give an update on their fiscal stability plan.

While families are struggling with the cost of housing and essentials, Tim Houston’s promises of more jobs and a growing economy have yet to be seen. Nova Scotians are paying more of their hard-earned money and they deserve to see better results – not just excuses from this government.”
