Nova Scotia Power must work for Nova Scotians: NDP
HALIFAX – The following is a statement from Official Opposition Leader Claudia Chender:
“Nova Scotians are rightfully frustrated by news today that the Nova Scotia Power (NSP) data breach is worse than initially believed – and hundreds of thousands more people may have had their data stolen.
NSP has now committed to extending credit monitoring to 5 years for all those affected, as called for by the NDP. Any customer, past or present, can now sign up for free credit monitoring.
We still don’t have answers from Nova Scotia Power about why social insurance numbers were kept on file. Sensitive information was stolen, and people are rightly upset and worried about their personal information being taken. New Democrats are committed to making our power utility work for the people it serves.
This is a utility that all residents of the province are required to be customers of – they have to do better. Government has a role to play to ensure that Nova Scotia Power is working for Nova Scotians.”
This fall, the NDP will move to protect Nova Scotians by tabling legislation to allow free credit freezes, modernize rules around the storage of private personal information, and reintroduce legislation to review the ownership structure of the utility going forward.
