New info shows Houston government stacking the deck against renters: NDP

HALIFAX – The following is a statement from Official Opposition Leader Claudia Chender:

“Documents released today by Dal Legal Aid show that the Houston government is actively sharing important information with the Rental Housing Providers of NS (formerly IPOANS) but not with Dalhousie Legal Aid and other organizations protecting tenants’ rights.

This is yet another example of this government keeping Nova Scotians in the dark when it suits their agenda.

This government has repeatedly refused to protect renters and has stood by while rents have skyrocketed due to abuse of the fixed-term lease loophole in the rent cap. Earlier this year, the Houston government made it easier for renters to be evicted, claiming the need for balance.

This government knows from their own statistics that renters in our province are being exploited, and they’re still stacking the deck against them. Nova Scotians are learning who Tim Houston is interested in protecting— and it’s clearly not renters.”
