NDP focus on lowering costs for Nova Scotians as legislature returns

HALIFAX— On Tuesday, NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender revealed that New Democrats will be proposing practical solutions to protect renters, get more people on a pathway to homeownership, lower monthly costs and get better health care in our communities throughout the legislative session.

As a first step to addressing high costs, the NSNDP is introducing legislation that lowers Nova Scotians’ power bills by 10 per cent a month and protects private information.

“Nova Scotians love this place, and they should be able to count on a bright future in this province. That starts with a house or apartment you can actually afford, lower everyday costs, and health care in your community with professionals you know and trust,” said Chender. “What we’re proposing today can lower people’s power bills and ensure corporations aren’t keeping your private information for no reason.”
“New Democrats are pushing for changes that help families like yours plan for the future, live a good life, lower your costs, and get care when you need it.”

Since the Houston government was elected, families are spending an average of $400 more a year on their power bills, that’s a 20 per cent increase on residential power bills. Nova Scotia Power has applied to increase residential power rates by 8 per cent over the next two years. Yet, Nova Scotians already spend 30 per cent more on their home energy bills compared to the average Canadian.

“It’s the government’s job to make sure essential services like power are affordable and reliable,” said NSNDP Energy Critic Susan Leblanc. “In February, we proposed regulatory changes, a low income rate, and an utility ownership study to give Nova Scotians more support. But winter is coming, and people need power. That’s why today, we’re introducing additional legislation to lower Nova Scotians’ power bills by 10 per cent and protect people’s private information.”
