More protections secured for Nova Scotians against intimate deepfake images

HALIFAX – Today, Official Opposition Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement on changes to the Intimate Images and Cyber-Protection Act:

“Expanding protections against digitally altered and generated intimate images is an important measure that we have been calling for to help protect Nova Scotians.

Women and gender-diverse people are often the targets of this kind of abuse. No one should have to live with the fear that an intimate image of them, real or fake, could be shared online without their consent.

At a time when Nova Scotia is facing an epidemic of intimate partner and gender-based violence, we need to make sure they have the protections they need and deserve, both offline and online.

New Democrats called for stronger protections against explicit AI deepfakes earlier this year and introduced legislation to make that happen. We’re glad to see the Houston government act on this now.

Most of the positive changes we’ve seen from this government so far this session come from ideas New Democrats have championed. It's encouraging that they’re finally starting to listen to some of the concerns being brought forward, and we hope the Houston government will continue to act on ideas that make this province a safer place for everyone.”
