Long-Time Liberal: This Time I’m Voting NDP

Halifax – Today, NDP Leader Gary Burrill spoke with Jo-Ann Grant, former Liberal candidate for Chester-St Margaret’s, about how Iain Rankin and the Liberals are out of touch with the needs of real people and why she is voting NDP this time.

“Each day of this campaign we’ve talked with people about their real problems. From skyrocketing rents to long waits for mental health care to adequately addressing the climate emergency, everyone has their own experience of how eight years of Liberal decisions have left them behind,” said Burrill. “Each of these issues has been made worse under Iain Rankin and the Liberals. As people look at the choices in this election, they see that the NDP is speaking to their real concerns.”

Grant is a long-time member of the Liberal Party and feels that the current Liberal Party no longer represents her values.

"I have been a Liberal most of my life, as a voter and campaigner, and as a provincial Liberal candidate in 2009. After learning about the proposed sale of what Nova Scotians knew as Owls Head Provincial Park, and knowing the provincial Liberal record on the environment and long-term care, I knew I could not support the Liberals in this election,” said Grant. “While protecting Owls Head was the pivotal issue for me, after reading the NDP platform, I realized that the NDP is completely aligned with my values re: open net pen fish farms, health care, rent control, long-term care, and a living wage. This election I am voting NDP."

An NDP government will make rent control permanent, cancel the sale of Owls Head Park, provide same-day/next-day mental health care, and put the needs of real people at the front and center of government decisions.

“I’ve talked to people on their doorsteps from one end of the province to the other,” said Burrill. “Disappointed Liberal voters are ready for something better. We need your help. On August 17, vote NDP.”
