Leblanc: Government must respect Treaty rights

HALIFAX – Susan Leblanc, NDP Spokesperson for Aboriginal Affairs and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, made the following statement marking Treaty Day:

“Today, Nova Scotians reflect on the treaties which govern the relationship between our province and the Mi’kmaq. We are all Treaty people, and we must take the time to learn what our responsibilities are under Treaties of Peace and Friendship, and work towards truth, justice, and reconciliation.
The Liberal government has gone to court over its duty to consult with Mi’kmaq communities when it comes to the Northern Pulp effluent plant and the Alton Gas storage project.
True reconciliation requires more from the provincial government. Our Caucus will continue to advocate that the Liberal government implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report and the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.”
