Leblanc: Free masks should be available in public spaces

HALIFAX– The NDP Caucus is calling on the Liberal government to provide free masks in public spaces to help individuals comply with mandatory mask rules.

“If you are struggling to buy groceries or pay your power bill, the added cost of non-medical masks may be a barrier. Nova Scotia can lead by example by providing non-medical masks in public places to encourage their use,” said NDP Health and Wellness spokesperson Susan Leblanc.

The Liberal government announced today that masks will be required in the majority of public, indoor spaces as of July 31. As part of their reopening plan, Halifax Public Libraries has been handing out free masks at libraries in the HRM.

“We all recognize the importance of providing hand sanitizer, and soap in public washrooms. As our public health practices have evolved to respond to COVID-19, normalizing the availability and use of non-medical masks in public spaces is essential,” said Leblanc. “Dr. Strang has called for a positive and constructive approach. Having free masks readily available in our hospitals, schools, community centres, bus terminals, and other public spaces, would be a positive and constructive contribution from the government.”
