Iain Rankin’s Record on Long Term Care

HALIFAX -- Iain Rankin and the Liberals have kept seniors waiting for the long-term care they need. Each day the Liberals are spending more than $1 million to house seniors in hospital beds while they wait for an opening in long-term care. That’s $360 million a year.

In eight years, the Liberals have only added 57 new long-term care beds to the system. Iain says this is to prevent ‘overbuilding’. Really Iain? Today, a senior can wait nearly a year for a long-term care bed.

What have the Rankin Liberals been doing for eight years?

Northwood came to the Liberal government multiple times asking for more beds, individual rooms, and private washrooms for every resident. Northwood explained how important the additions were to the health and safety of their seniors and each time the Liberals said no.

Now during an election, Rankin says he has a plan to build. After eight years seniors and their families deserve better. Iain Rankin and the Liberals have made the health care crisis worse and they are ready to cut $209 million from services like health care. Real people will pay the price for these cuts.

The NDP will reverse Rankin’s ‘overbuild’ policy and will end double and triple bunking in our nursing care homes. Every senior deserves to have their own room with their own washroom. Families deserve to know that their loved ones are receiving the best care possible.

It’s time for something better.
