Houston must help families afford basics as carbon tax looms

HALIFAX – NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement on the upcoming carbon tax:

“In a matter of weeks, Nova Scotians will see a dramatic increase in the cost of fuel in our province. This will come on the heels of historic cost of living increases on everything from food to housing, and power.
The Houston government knew a price on carbon was coming. Instead of negotiating with Ottawa and making a deal that would help everyday Nova Scotians, they picked petty political fights that will do nothing to help families manage their household budgets.
There are many things Tim Houston could do as premier to help Nova Scotians better manage rising prices, including cutting the tax on groceries, freezing senior and family pharmacare fees, and, permanently increasing and indexing the thresholds for home heating programs like HARP.
The Houston government continues to leave everyday families behind. It’s time for real action to help the people of Nova Scotia today.”
