Houston must drop appeal of disability rights decision

HALIFAX – NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement in response to the Premier’s comments on his appeal of the Disability Rights Coalition decision:

“Tim Houston is showing his true colours. There is nothing progressive about attempting to overturn a Nova Scotia court decision which condemns discrimination against disabled people.

In October, the Premier said he wouldn’t appeal a court ruling which found that the province had systemically discriminated against people with disabilities. Now, he has reversed that decision and his government is appealing to the Supreme Court of Canada.

The court ruling they are trying to overturn was very clear. Nova Scotia has discriminated against people with disabilities and has violated their human rights.

Appealing this decision is a pernicious betrayal of the hundreds of people currently living in institutions, their families and loved ones.”
