Houston government must protect workers’ rights: NDP

HALIFAX – Official Opposition Labour Critic Paul Wozney made the following statement in response to Ubisoft shuttering its Halifax studio after employees unionized:

“It’s deeply disheartening to see 71 hard-working Nova Scotians lose their jobs after exercising their right to form a union. This situation should raise serious red flags for anyone who cares about workers in this province, which has some of the weakest and most regressive labour protections in the country.
Especially when public dollars are used to support private companies, the Houston government has a clear responsibility to make sure workers aren’t left vulnerable when corporations decide to pull the plug. We need real improvements to Nova Scotia’s Labour Standards Code and Trade Union Act to ensure stronger protections for workers, easier pathways to union certification, and an end to practices that allow companies to undermine collective bargaining and workers' rights.
Nova Scotians know we need to grow our economy – and we can’t do that without looking after the people who make our economy work.”
