Housing need requires urgent action

HALIFAX – NDP Housing spokesperson Suzy Hansen made the following statement about today’s government housing announcement:

“While today’s announcement is a step towards more housing supply it is concerning that there are no affordability targets mentioned in terms of how much of the land we’ll develop has to be used for affordable homes.

Today’s announcement from the Conservatives isn’t the kind of urgent response we know is needed. We also heard today that there are almost 600 people who don’t have safe, permanent housing in the HRM.

We need to use every tool available including the province having a first right of refusal to buy affordable units when they come on the market to then help keep them affordable.”
