Housing affordability needs short and long-term solutions

Halifax -- NDP Housing Spokesperson Lisa Roberts made the following statement after today’s Community Services Committee meeting on affordable housing:

“What we heard today speaks to the reality that I hear from constituents and non-profit organizations, which is that there hasn’t been enough investment in housing and the market conditions are making it increasingly difficult for people to find an affordable place to live.

In the short-term, we should reintroduce rent control and create effective regulations of short-term rentals. Longer-term we need to develop and support more non-market housing, including co-ops and non-profit organizations. And ultimately we need a full housing strategy.”
