Hansen: More support needed for families dealing with changes to school calendar
HALIFAX – NDP Education spokesperson Suzy Hansen made the following statement in response to today’s COVID-19 update:
“Today more changes to the school calendar were announced without any support for families who, once again, have to adapt because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Students will now return to school on Monday, January 10, leaving families to figure out child care for four additional days. The province should be stepping in to help ensure care is available and to make sure families can manage the additional cost.
The Houston government must make sure that lines of communication are clear and consistent between schools and families in case of any outbreaks or additional closures. We are in the fourth wave of the pandemic and still families are being left on their own to adapt to changing public health advice.”
The NSNDP continues to call for permanent paid sick leave in the Labour Standards Code so that everyone working in the province is able to stay home when feeling unwell or when caring for a sick loved one.
