Hansen: African Heritage Month a time for listening and action

HALIFAX– NSNDP African Nova Scotian Affairs spokesperson Suzy Hansen made the following statement marking the start of African Heritage Month:

“As we take time this month to celebrate and learn, it’s important to acknowledge that the lived experiences of African Nova Scotians have been shaped by systemic racism. I call upon the Houston government to confront this reality and take meaningful steps towards changing it.
We know that there are community-based proposals that could be legislated with immediate positive impact for Black communities. Things like a commitment to begin conversations about reparations together with Black Nova Scotians, a commitment to develop an African Nova Scotian policing strategy, and a legislated ban on street checks by police.
While consultation matters, Black communities have already been very clear about the priorities that require action now. February is an important time for everyone, especially the government, to listen.”
