Federal and Provincial NDP to speak on health care, housing

HALIFAX - Day two of the Nova Scotia NDP Convention kicks off this morning at 9:00 am at the Westin Hotel in Halifax. Hundreds of delegates will hear from NSNDP Leader Gary Burrill and Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.

“It’s time for something better in Nova Scotia. The NDP is focused on listening to communities and proposing solutions that can address the challenges we face,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. “We actually can have a province where the health care you need is provided, where the energy we use comes from our own renewable resources, and where everybody can afford a place to live.”

The Federal NDP is using its leverage in a minority Parliament to try and force the Liberals to bring in a National Pharmacare Program that would make sure Canadians have access to the prescription medications they need by using their health card, not their credit card. The Federal NDP introduced the legislation in Parliament last week.

“New Democrats know that sky-high prices put enormous pressure on the provinces. In fact, prescription drugs are now the second largest spending category in Canadian healthcare, costing more than physicians’ services,” said Singh. “This isn’t right. New Democrats are committed to doing better. We’re proud to be beginning 2020 by bringing forward ground-breaking federal legislation to establish a universal, comprehensive and public pharmacare plan that will deliver better healthcare for everyone in Nova Scotia.”

The Nova Scotia NDP Convention continues throughout the day today, including a dance party with Jagmeet Singh at 8:00 pm. On Sunday, elections will be held for the Nova Scotia NDP Executive and Provincial Council.
