Embracing Equity year-round, not just on International Women’s Day
HALIFAX– NDP Status of Women spokesperson Suzy Hansen made the following statement for International Women’s Day:
“International Women’s Day is a global day to recognize and celebrate women and girls' social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It's also a time to raise awareness of the progress made towards achieving gender equality and the work that still remains to be done. This year’s theme of Embracing Equity has many meanings to many groups and acknowledges the work still to come on building workplaces and communities that are more equitable and inclusive.
One of this year’s calls from the UN is to forge inclusive work cultures where women's careers thrive and their achievements are celebrated. In Nova Scotia we know the roles that make up the caring economy are predominantly filled by women. The frontline staff and workers that take care of the people of Nova Scotia in schools, hospitals and beyond are so often women and gender diverse folks. Today, and always, we need to better support each other so that people make a living wage doing these important jobs.
When we embrace equity, we build communities and workplaces that include more women and gender diverse people that are stronger and healthier for everyone.”
