Derek Mombourquette refuses to stand up for Whitney Pier rink
Rink lacks funds to operate this season
SYDNEY – In Question Period today, Derek Mombourquette, Minister of Municipal Affairs and MLA for Sydney-Whitney Pier, refused to commit provincial funding to save the Whitney Pier Rink from closing.
“I am very disappointed that the Minister would not commit the funds to prevent the Whitney Pier Rink from closing its doors at the end of this week,” said Tammy Martin, MLA for Cape Breton Centre. “The Rink has been a vital part of the community for almost 50 years. If the Liberals could find over $80 million to buy votes in a pre-election spending spree last Spring, they can find the $20,000 needed to save the Whitney Pier Rink.”
The Board of Directors of the rink has requested $20,000 from the province to help keep the lights on and ensure the survival of the community rink.
“I’m disappointed the Minister won’t commit support for Whitney Pier, especially since he recently moved his office from Whitney Pier to Sydney. It’s the first time in more than 50 years that there hasn’t been an MLA office in Whitney Pier” said Martin.
