Davis Day -- the fight for workers protections continues

HALIFAX -- NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement to mark Davis Day:

“Davis Day is a day to reflect on the workers’ rights movement across the province. And while a great deal of time has passed since the 1925 strike during which William Davis was killed by police, it’s important to acknowledge that people working today continue to lack many basic protections.

This year especially, following 15 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue the fight for paid sick days for all workers. Every day, people who are crucial to our communities and economy faced the majority of the pandemic head-on without access to any paid sick days.

Davis Day is an annual reminder that workers’ rights often come at great sacrifice. The NDP recognizes the sacrifice of essential workers during this pandemic and is committed to ensuring nobody has to choose between going to work sick and not being able to pay for rent or groceries.”
