Coombes: Liberals failing on child poverty

HALIFAX - Kendra Coombes, NDP Community Services Spokesperson made the following statement about the annual Child Poverty Report Card from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Nova Scotia office:

“The Liberal government is failing on child poverty. More than 41,370 children live in poverty in our province. Nova Scotia has the most children living in poverty out of any province in Atlantic Canada, and we are the only province where child poverty is increasing instead of decreasing. In Cape Breton, the situation is even worse with more than a third of children living in poverty.
So many families are struggling, especially at this time of year. We need a plan to eliminate poverty in Nova Scotia. What is needed is the political will to take the necessary action now. The Liberal government could take immediate action on poverty by implementing a $15 minimum wage and building more affordable housing.”
