Coombes: Island Employment report provides clarity and closure for Cape Bretoners

Reserve Mines – NDP Labour Spokesperson Kendra Coombes made the following statement in response to the Auditor General’s report on Island Employment:

“Today’s report helps bring some clarity and closure to the situation with Island Employment. Years of Liberal government lack of oversight, followed by a hasty decision of the Houston government led to a period of lack of services for the people of Cape Breton and uncertainty for the workers who were left unemployed.

Today’s report highlights the issues and gross mismanagement of public funds at Island Employment. I’m glad to see the work of the Auditor General give us a more full account of what happened and how to avoid anything similar in the future.

There were serious issues with how things were managed at Island Employment and these vital services were impacted because of the lack of oversight and proper governance. I look forward to the upcoming Public Accounts meeting later this week where we will discuss the report with government officials.”
