Colter Simmonds chosen as NDP candidate for Preston byelection

Preston -- Colter Simmonds will be the Nova Scotia New Democrat candidate for Preston in the upcoming byelection.

“Now more than ever we need to elect representatives that truly embody the values and priorities that reflect the people they serve. I have no doubt that Colter Simmons is the right candidate for this election and that he will be a champion for this community as the next MLA for Preston,” said NDP Leader Claudia Chender. “We know people in the Preston riding are worried about rising costs, opportunities for young people, and the enduring impacts of systemic racism. Being a community-minded leader, I know Colter, with the NDP, will fight for a better future for all residents of Preston.”

Simmonds is a passionate mentor of youth in Preston. A proud member of the African Nova Scotian community, Colter is best known as Coach Colter (C.C.) and the founder of the We Will Win Youth Association. His campaign will prioritize community-based mental health services, education and job opportunities for youth, promoting skilled trades and apprenticeships, addressing gun violence in our communities, and affordable housing.

“I love the communities that make up this district and I’ve dedicated my life to mentoring and coaching kids from one corner of Preston to the other. I know there is so much more our representative in the legislature could be doing for our community” said Simmonds. “There is no better place to grow up than Preston and my campaign is going to be focused on building more opportunities for young people, who will help take care of their parents and grandparents down the road. Youth and young people will be a top priority for me, both as a candidate and as the next MLA for Preston.”

Simmonds was the NDP candidate for Preston during the 2021 general election, running a strong campaign and picking up 28 percent of the vote. Premier Houston must call the byelection by October 1, the byelection was triggered by the resignation of Liberal MLA Angela Simmonds.
