Child care for essential workers needed as all HRM schools are set to close

HALIFAX -- NDP Education and Early Childhood Development spokesperson Claudia Chender made the following statement today:

“With the news today that public schools in the Halifax Regional Municipality and some communities in Hants County will move to at-home learning, it is disappointing to see that this doesn’t include a plan for child care for essential workers who are also parents.
Thousands of families will now be dealing with the question of how they will manage child care for their school-aged children. That will include hundreds of parents who are essential workers in health care, child care and other sectors, who still have to go to work tomorrow.
In other provinces when major shutdowns took place last spring child care was made available to ensure essential workers would be able to continue working. Nova Scotia should be doing the same.”
