Chender: Statement on National Indigenous Peoples Day

HALIFAX –NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day:

“June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, where we honour and celebrate the rich culture and traditions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people and communities.
While today is a day of celebration, we also reflect on the painful history endured by Indigenous communities across the country, including the Mi’kmaq here in Nova Scotia. Most importantly, we must make sure that reflection is followed by action to promote reconciliation and right the generations of wrongs against Indigenous peoples.
We continue to call on the federal and provincial government to fully carry out the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action along with the recommendations from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. We must commit to building an inclusive and equitable future for all.”
