Chender: Current services aren’t good enough for children with autism in crisis

Halifax -- Dartmouth South MLA and NDP Education spokesperson Claudia Chender made the following statement about the state of autism services:

“Last year Carly Sutherland was brave enough to come forward and share her struggles to get her son Callum the support he needed, and now today we are hearing a similarly heartbreaking story from Tara Mills. We had hoped that public advocacy by the Sutherlands and others would not be in vain however, families in crisis are still fighting desperately for the care and support they need.

Families like Tara’s shouldn’t have to face so many hurdles to get the care their children need and deserve. The IWK has said that a review of autism services has been completed but the results have not been made public. We know that a number of departments provide services for children with autism. Without a public review and an update to the provincial autism strategy, these families will continue to fall through the cracks.”
