Cape Breton’s housing crisis demands urgent action: NDP

SYDNEY –Today, NDP MLA Kendra Coombes made the following statement:

“Cape Bretoners need and deserve homes they can afford to live in. While any new housing is welcome, the Houston government is failing to meet the scale of what’s needed across Cape Breton and Nova Scotia. Rents are rising, vacancy rates are low, and too many families are being priced out of their communities.

Nova Scotia needs thousands more affordable homes each year just to keep up. The situation is especially urgent in Cape Breton, where the lack of housing people can afford is driving people away and making it harder to attract workers and grow our communities.

We need bold, immediate action – not just piecemeal projects and photo opportunities. We need public investment in non-market and deeply affordable housing, strong protections for renters, and a dedicated housing minister focused solely on getting the job done.”
