Burrill: Premier fell down on the job

HALIFAX - NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement about the Premier opening the door to an extension of the Boat Harbour Act:

“When it comes to the situation of Northern Pulp and Boat Harbour, Stephen McNeil has fallen down on the job. We would not be in this position today if the Premier had started working towards a solution five years ago when the Boat Harbour Act was passed with all-party support.
Instead, the McNeil Liberals have persisted with a hands-off approach. Today’s statement shows that for the past five years, Stephen McNeil has never adequately registered what is at stake for the people of Pictou County, including Pictou Landing First Nation, workers at Northern Pulp, and fishing communities, as well as forestry workers across Nova Scotia.
The divisions and uncertainty faced by these communities today could have been prevented. The Liberal government’s failure to lead on this issue is both incompetent and negligent on a major level.”
