Affordable housing crisis hitting communities across HRM

Dartmouth -- NDP Dartmouth North MLA Susan Leblanc made the following statement about the mass eviction of two apartment buildings in her community:

“This is awful, and unfortunately not isolated, in Dartmouth North or in HRM as a whole. Alongside community groups, my office is supporting many of the people in these buildings, but there are so few truly affordable units left in the HRM that the search has been difficult.

This housing crisis continues to build as people are “renovicted” left, right and centre. These renters are largely battling with a system and a situation that is totally out of their control. Some are extremely concerned regarding homelessness and losing custody of their children. Some are choosing to pay rent and not grocery or utility bills.

We need rent control now, and we need to create more affordable housing.”
