Action needed to address anti-Black racism in Nova Scotia

Halifax -- NDP African Nova Scotian Affairs spokesperson Susan Leblanc made the following statement ahead of African Heritage Month which starts tomorrow:

“Learning about and celebrating African Nova Scotian heritage is important for all Nova Scotians. We celebrate the rich and vibrant history of Black communities and the contributions they’ve made to the unique culture of Nova Scotia. In doing so, we also must learn about the anti-Black racism that has existed for as long as people of African descent have lived here.
We must do more. We must address the racial profiling and racial discrimination Black people in our province face every day.
African Nova Scotians need to know that they can shop, drive, go to school, and walk down the street with the same expectation of freedom and respect as anyone else.
In the last month alone there have been a number of disturbing examples of discrimination and racial profiling from police. Those of us who occupy positions of power have to do the work to make our society more equitable and fair for everyone.”
