Honouring Treaty Day means honouring Mi’kmaw rights and voices: NSNDP

HALIFAX – Today, NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement on Treaty Day:

“Today marks Treaty Day and the beginning of Mi’kmaw History Month. This is a time to celebrate Mi’kmaw history, culture, language, and the strength of Mi’kmaw communities across Mi'kma'ki.
We also recognize and honour the enduring treaty relationship between the Mi’kmaq and all those who live in Mi'kma'ki. The Peace and Friendship Treaties are living agreements, and they come with responsibilities that must be respected every day.
As the original and ongoing protectors of this land, the Mi’kmaq have a constitutional right to meaningful consultation.
Honouring the treaties means more than just acknowledging them. It means listening, consulting in good faith, and respecting Mi’kmaw rights and voices in the decisions that affect their communities.
Today and throughout Mi’kmaw History Month, we call on the Houston government to live up to those responsibilities, respect its duty to consult, and ensure that Mi’kmaw voices are heard before decisions are made – not after.”
