New representative elected in Chéticamp-Margarees-Pleasant Bay by-election

HALIFAX–NDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement:

“We want to congratulate Claude Bourgeois on his win, and we look forward to working with him as he serves as MLA for his riding.

Even though we hoped for a different result tonight, this was an historic night for the new riding of Chéticamp-Margarees-Pleasant Bay. The people in these communities have elected their first representative, ensuring they have their voices heard in the provincial government.

On behalf of all New Democrats, we want to thank Trevor Poirier, who was an incredible candidate. He worked hard doing double-duty, knocking on doors and campaigning while also leading his union local who were striking for a fair deal from the Houston government.

Throughout this by-election, the NDP heard from voters about the way this government’s decisions impact their community. Whether it’s cuts to culture, tourism and heritage, long ambulance waits, and roads and cellular infrastructure that need work. It’s never been more important for the people of Chéticamp-Margarees-Pleasant Bay to have their voices heard.”
