The Liberal government recently made a decision to allow tire burning at the Lafarge cement plant near Brookfield, NS. Residents are concerned about effects on air and water quality in their communities. The pilot project will divert 24% of used tires from a provincial recycling program and allow them to be burned. Taxpayers will still pay the same recycling fees for tires. The NDP is calling on the McNeil government and Environment Minister Iain Rankin to make tire burning against the law.
