Statement by Claudia Chender on street checks

Halifax – Claudia Chender, NDP Justice Spokesperson, made the following statement on street checks:

“The NDP Caucus is pleased to see that the Liberal government has finally committed to putting a stop to street checks. It’s the right decision and we wish it had come sooner. All of the evidence requested by the Liberal government has shown that street checks disproportionately and negatively impact people who are African Nova Scotian or Black. Former Justice MacDonald confirmed that there is no legal authorization for this practice. Today’s about-face from the Liberal government is entirely a result of the dedicated and consistent work of people in the African Nova Scotian and Black community, who have endured the negative impacts of street checks for too long.”
