Possible cuts to early literacy concerning

HALIFAX -- NDP Education and Early Childhood Development Spokesperson Claudia Chender made the following statement in response to reports that early literacy supports are being cut at some schools:

“I have heard from a number of people at different schools that there will be fewer supports in the classroom next year for students who need help. This is the exact opposite of what we know we need in our schools.
In the absence of elected school boards, we need transparency around these decisions. The Minister needs to be clear with parents and inform them about what is going on and why. Year after year, we cannot have parents and teachers hearing about these kinds of cuts through word-of-mouth and then struggling to know where to turn for answers.”

Chender sent a letter to the Minister Monday asking for clarity about what is happening with Early Literacy Supports for the coming school year.
