Nova Scotians concerned about growing wealth gap

Halifax -- The NDP Caucus-led Prosperity Shared: The Commission for Economic Equality in Nova Scotia wrapped up its tour of the province last week in Sydney. The Commission hosted six meetings in November asking people their thoughts about the state of our economy and how we can do things better.

“The Prosperity Shared Commission has been an opportunity to talk with people in their communities about the struggles they face, some of the solutions that already exist, and how the NDP can build upon those solutions,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. “When we look at the state so many people in Nova Scotia find themselves in, we know that better is possible.”

The Prosperity Shared Commission included three commissioners, Janet Bickerton, Charlie Huntley, and Lana MacLean. All three will now help produce a report that brings together what they heard at the public meetings in November.

"People are looking for relief. They’re looking for hope,” said Lana MacLean, who also works as a clinical social worker. “We heard from many, many people during our meetings that there are opportunities for change to happen and I’m excited by the conversations we’ve had and the chance to imagine a province where prosperity is shared by all, not reserved for a select few.”

Meetings were held in Dartmouth, Port Williams, Fairview, Bridgewater, Antigonish, and Sydney. The Commission’s final report will be available in the new year.
