NDP will protect our environment

Plan includes Environmental Bill of Rights

FALL RIVER – Today, NDP Leader Gary Burrill presented his plan to better protect our environment.

“The McNeil Liberals’ record on the environment is unenviable,” said Burrill. “The NDP knows that Nova Scotia can be a world-leader in protecting our environment again. We will stand side-by-side with communities in standing up for the environment.”

To protect our environment, an NDP government will:

  • Introduce an Environmental Bill of Rights that will give Nova Scotians a greater say in decisions that impact their environment;
  • Set hard targets for emissions reduction and return Nova Scotia to its place as a national leader in the fight against climate change;
  • Continue a complete moratorium on fracking;
  • Protect our oceans and the fishery through stronger regulations on offshore drilling;
  • Implement the recommendations of the Doelle-Lahey report;
  • Reinstate the 50% clearcutting target and work with the industry and private woodlot owners to promote sustainable forestry practices;
  • Lead the example through establishing a carbon-neutral government.

“When it comes to our environment, Stephen McNeil has no vision,” added Burrill. “We will put in place the needed protections and investments to ensure our future generations will also be able to enjoy our resources.”
